Define Native Status—and Understand Ecotypes
UF/IFAS generally defines a Florida native plant as one presumed to have been present in the state before European contact, while noting that historical evidence can be incomplete and the status of some species can be debated. Populations within the same species can also adapt to different local conditions through natural selection. These ecotypes may differ in growth, appearance, timing, or tolerance of moisture and temperature. A statewide species name therefore does not always reveal how material from a particular source will behave in Southwest Florida.
For ordinary residential landscapes, provenance is not equally critical for every plant. It is still worth recording when the source is known—especially for plants whose performance, seasonal timing, or environmental function may vary by origin.
The Site-First Research Sequence
Effective native-plant research begins with the property rather than a catalog. A useful sequence is to describe the site, define the job the planting must perform, and only then use a database to narrow the research.
1. Record Regional and Climate Context
- Note the county and whether the property is coastal, inland, exposed, or sheltered.
- Record the applicable USDA hardiness zone using the current map rather than relying on an old nursery reference.
- Describe unusual cold pockets, reflected heat, wind corridors, or other microclimates that make one part of the property behave differently from another.
2. Map Light, Space, and Built Constraints
- Track whether the location receives full sun, shifting partial shade, or deep shade across the day.
- Measure the available width and height at maturity, not only the empty space visible at installation.
- Account for roof overhangs, utilities, power lines, foundations, walks, pools, and neighboring boundaries.
3. Describe Soil and Water Movement
- Identify whether the bed contains native sand, shell, limestone fill, compacted material, organic soil, or another altered profile.
- Observe how long water remains after heavy rain and how dry the same area becomes later in the dry season.
- Record possible salt spray, saltwater inundation, or irrigation-water concerns rather than assuming every coastal property has the same exposure.
4. Define the Intended Function
Decide what the planting needs to accomplish. Screening a utility, shading hardscape, stabilizing an edge, framing an arrival, preserving a view, and supporting wildlife are different jobs. A plant can be regionally appropriate and still be wrong for the required scale or function.
Use the FNPS Plant Database as a Screening Tool
The Florida Native Plant Society Plant Database (opens in a new tab) provides a practical way to filter plants by growing conditions, county, soil, hardiness zone, and salt-water flooding tolerance. Those filters can narrow a large statewide list into a more relevant research set.
Start with the conditions recorded during the site review, then compare the remaining results by mature size and intended use. If a location shifts between seasonal wetness and pronounced dryness, a single generic moisture label may not tell the whole story.
What the Filters Can Tell You
- Whether a plant is recorded for a particular county or regional range.
- Its documented light, soil, moisture, hardiness, and salt-water flooding attributes.
- Its general growth form, mature size, and possible landscape uses when those fields are available.
What a Database Result Cannot Settle
- Whether an altered residential soil profile resembles the plant's natural habitat.
- How reflected heat, walls, fences, roof lines, irrigation, and other built conditions change the planting area.
- Whether appropriate, healthy plant material is currently available from a regional grower.
- Whether the plant's form, growth rate, and maintenance needs fit the overall design.
Separate Research, Identification, and Sourcing
These activities are related, but they answer different questions. Keeping them separate prevents a database match, a photo-app suggestion, or a nursery label from carrying more certainty than it deserves.
Database Research
Research produces a set of possibilities based on published plant attributes. It does not prove that a plant is present on the property, available for purchase, or suitable for the exact bed.
Plant Identification
Identification relies on observable botanical characteristics such as leaf arrangement, margins, flowers, fruit, stems, and growth habit. Automated image matching can offer a clue, but similar-looking native and nonnative plants make independent confirmation important before removal or retention decisions.
Nursery and Source Assessment
- Inspect root structure and general plant health rather than evaluating only the foliage visible above the pot.
- Confirm whether the material is a straight species, cultivar, or hybrid when that distinction matters to the goal.
- Ask about origin when provenance may affect seasonal behavior, environmental function, or local adaptation.
- Treat current availability as a separate practical question instead of assuming that every database entry is commercially produced.
Move from a Plant List to a Property Design
A researched plant list is valuable, but it is not yet a landscape. Plants still need to be arranged around growth rates, mature layers, circulation, views, irrigation zones, seasonal appearance, and the architecture of the home.
